When designing a blockchain system, it is important to perform a full risk assessment early in the process. It is important to understand the fundamental security assumptions made by blockchain technology and take action to mitigate any potential risks. The use of a private or permissioned blockchain, implementing secure key management processes, and properly designing the network used by the blockchain can go a long way toward improving the security of the system.

The future for blockchain and risk management in the context of data protection remains an uncertain future, at least in the short term. The GDPR was drafted with seemingly only centralised legacy systems in mind, containing limited authoritative guidance as to how to handle the processing of personal data within a blockchain ecosystem in a legally compliant manner.

It is hoped that this prevailing uncertainty is adequately addressed by the relevant authorities in the shortest possible future and in the meantime, bridging solutions should be carefully studied at the design stage of any blockchain use case.

However for this to happen, technology must meet the law and embrace ethics to ensure that innovation happens for the public good.

If we want blockchain to represent a real opportunity, than the future needs to see public policy, ethics and privacy principles embedded into the blockchain design. The more we do that, the more this technology can become an opportunity to counterbalance the centralised approach to data management that we are accustomed to.
